One Piece – A binge worthy live-action show

In the past couple of months many fans have binged One Piece. Some for the thousandth time!… The truth is that when it was revealed the show would be adapted to live-action byNetflix, many feared what may come of it. In cases such as Dragon Ball Evolution, or Avatar

The Last Airbender, the live-action adaptation was widely considered to be a disaster.

There was precedent to justify these fan’s fears.

But the truth is that it was nothing but fears after all! ONE PIECE live-action, released August 2023 on Netflix met and exceeded all expectations – the 1.31 billion minutes for One Piece equates to 21.85 million hours of viewing in the U.S. (a little under 16 percent of the worldwide total Netflix).
In the world of anime and manga, few franchises can boast a legacy as enduring and influential as Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece; the show that beat all longest-running records for TV, in its animated version, now gains a new life.

One of the secrets for this success was the casting process, which valued the character’s complexity. Iñaki Godoy, as Luffy, is without a doubt one of the treasures, if not “THE Treasure – One Piece”, found during production. As the central character of the entire One Piece universe, his performance was the reason that Oda agreed to do the live-action version.

“My biggest worry about the live-action was whether we would be able to find someone like Luffy. But I was watching various audition tapes, and when I saw you, I kind of started laughing. You’re just like the character I draw in the manga.” – Eiichiro Oda.

Adapting the plot to this new format was masterfully done; for example, (spoiler alert!) we learn that Garp is Luffy’s grandfather during the first season, whereas in the anime this is only revealed in episode 314. This type of decision reveals the thought and work that went into adapting this massive volume of work.
